Match report  This year's Portobello Open saw 30 anglers return to last year's venue and saw much better weights than 2008's event. Warm, humid and drizzly weather persisted for much of the day and while carp were busy cruising the lake, some pegs saw few if any bites while other pegs were alive with solid, fighting fish.

Again it was an end peg that made a difference, but this time it came from the opposite end of the lake. Darren Whelton bagged 35.680 of carp on shallow fished meat to win the Open and take home the €350 first prize winnings. Darren finished almost 10kg clear of Damian Maddock, with Danny Murphy taking third place. The two juniors put many of the field to shame by both breaking into double figures, Curtis Walsh beating Robert Smithers to take home the rod and reel that was on offer to the best junior. Both boys fished paste at about 6 metres.
